For those that are hearing about the Charlotte Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation for the first time are probably thinking how can there be a surfing club in Charlotte? There is no way you can surf on Lake Norman! Well, you are kind of right. While you can wake surf on the lake, as well as countless other fun water activities, the Surfrider Foundation is far from a surf club. We are a local grassroots, all volunteer chapter, supported by an international organization made up of over 80 chapters, 85 youth clubs and over 50,000 members. We are ocean activists, dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches, by bringing the same mission and values of our coastal chapters to the Charlotte area.
Started in 2013, our chapter has grown to over 82 members, and more than 100 volunteers and activists. You may have seen us out cleaning up the shore line of one of our lakes or the Catawba, marking our cities storm drains with No Dumping placards or out at a local festival bringing awareness of some of the issues we face here as well as within our oceans.
We are at an exciting time within our chapter. We continue to grow at a quick pace and have partnered with other great local organizations and businesses. Most recently we hosted a public forum and business mixer around the dangers of offshore oil exploration and drilling off our coasts. Over the next few months we have some great events planned, such as a lake cleanup for International Coastal Cleanup Day and attending the US Whitewater Center’s fall film series as they screen the Andy Irons documentary.
Even more exciting is we are looking for you to join us. Stop by one of our upcoming events and see what we are all about. We are always looking for volunteers at any one of our family friendly events, no one is too young or old. If you are looking for a way to give back to your community, be part of something amazing, get involved in current issues that are are direct threat our lakes, our oceans and marine life, water quality and beach access, please reach out or better yet, check out our upcoming events. We would love to show you just how great this powerful activist network around the world is creating real change.
